A lot of doing a push up is mental. It's easy to convince yourself that you can't do something, and then it gets much harder. That aside, though, you can try some push ups on your knees, or don't go down all the way. Bench press is another good alternative to push ups. It's basically the same motion, but you can control the amount of weight, and get started with a 45 pound bar or something even lighter, if that's what you need. I don't know how much you weigh, or what weight you'd be comfortable with, but you may need to lose a few pounds before you'll be able to do push ups. As always, the best way to lose pounds is running(not walking!) a few miles every day and controlling your diet. Check out some of our guides for tips on that.

You should consider taking up tennis, racquetball, swimming or boxing to help develop your upper body and lose weight. Doing a cardio routine that utilizes the shoulders, arms, and back will help you achieve your goals.

Looking for an easy way to start push-ups? One nice thing about this method is that it keeps you off of the floor and encourages you to do a set every time you see an appropriate desk, counter, or even chair. You stay clean don't even have to change out of your street clothes (flat shoes or bare feet though!)Try standing two or three feet away from a counter top. Place your hands on the counter (pad your hands with a towel if the edge hurts your hands) about shoulder width apart. Keeping your back, neck aligned and hips straight, and tummy tight, bend your elbows to allow your chest to approach the edge of the counter in a slow controlled movement. Then push back to return to an incline position. Try to do 10 to 20 reps every time you go near a counter top (or desk if it's tall enough for you). If you can't do 10, stand closer to the edge. If you can do twenty, move further away. Too close won't help. If you have trouble getting comfortable at the counter (too low or too high), find a staircase. If that's still too tough, stand a foot or so away from a wall and start there with the same general setup. Remember not to let your hips bend or your back/stomach sag.

Oh yes, everything's going great! Except for the part where my workouts aren't logging properly. I am, however, going to the gym 3-5 times a week and making steady progress. What about yourself? How are those pushups coming? Great to see you are still using the site. I hope it's helping you achieve your goals!
